14 Degrees was delighted to be invited to present a One Day team to play against the Australian Transplant Cricket Club on October 16, 2008, as part of the David Hookes Tribute Series 2008.

The match was played at Allan Border Oval, Mosman, on a sparkling sunny Spring day.  The game did not begin until 12.30 due to a damp pitch from rain earlier in the week, but remarkably, the teams managed a full 40 overs each before cessation of play around 6.15pm.  The grounds team did a great job to prepare the wicket in the circumstances and is to be commended for its efforts.

The match was played in a fun but competitive spirit using modified rules to ensure everyone had the best chance of play and it brought the best out in all the players.  14 Degrees arranged for Lisa Sthalekar, from Cricket NSW and the Australian Women's Test Team, to play, and the ATCC was delighted to have Lisa join their side.  Lisa now seems to have a whole new band of fans!

14 Degrees equally enjoyed having Graham Marsh and Nigel Mills, of the Great Britain Transplant Cricket Club, join them on the day.  Graham and Nigel now officially belong to the 14 Degrees player family!

Both teams were delighted to meet Robyn Hookes, who watched the match and presented each team member at the end of the day with a copy of David Hookes' biography, "Remembering Hookesy".

The 14 Degrees team found it truly inspirational to play against the ATCC and looks forward to the possibility of an annual match.

14 Degrees would especially like to acknowledge its local team members, who kindly donated a valuable day of their time to support the ATCC and the cause of organ and tissue donation:

  • Tony Wright (C), Chris Ashby, David Connor, Wes Errey, Richard Haines, James Harvey, Matt Klaczkiewicz, Sean Pracey, Peter Witts.

14 Degrees would also like to acknowledge the support for the match provided by Transplant Australia and would like to thank Jeff Sewell, Chairman of the ATCC, for his tireless support in organisational arrangements for the match, as well as Greg Monaghan, Director, Cricket NSW, for bringing 14 Degrees and ATCC together.

  • 14 Degrees Man of the Match in ATCC Team:  Chris Wills

  • ATCC Man of the Match in 14 Degrees Team: James Harvey

The ATCC concluded the David Hookes Tribute Series with a dinner attended by Mark and Judi Taylor, Ambassadors for Transplant Australia.

The ATCC Player of the Series was Michael Campbell-Jones.

About ATCC

The ATCC operates under the auspices of Transplant Australia to foster awareness of organ and tissue donation.

The ATCC usually plays an annual series against the Great Britain Transplant Cricket Club for the David Hookes Memorial Shield; however, the GBTCC could not make it to Australia in 2008.

The 14 Degrees' team was fortunate to be invited to play one of a short series of replacement matches established as the David Hookes Tribute Series.

David Hookes was a great supporter of organ donation.  Australia has one of the lowest organ donation rates per capita of any country in the Western world and the David Hookes Foundation was established to give people something far more important than money.  It seeks to inspire more Australians to register as organ and tissue donors.

Just as importantly, it wants to encourage those that register to tell their families what they have done because they will have the final say about organ donation.

Support the cause by registering as an organ and tissue donor.
